People will remember Sarah Islam, the first organ donor

People will remember the name of Sarah Islam when the topic of organ transplant comes up. 20-year-old Sarah told her mother from her sickbed that she wanted to donate her organs. Doctors of the country have transplanted his two kidneys and two corneas in the body of four people.

One of Sarah’s two donated kidneys was transplanted into a kidney patient at BSMMU. The other was taken from BSMMU to the Kidney Foundation and transplanted into a woman’s body there. In addition, Sarah’s two corneas were implanted in both eyes today.

The doctors of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and the private organization Kidney Foundation transplanted the organs of the ‘declared dead person’ in this incident.

On the occasion of the first such surgery in the country, a press conference was organized at BSMMU on Thursday afternoon. Apart from the doctors of the two institutions, Sarah Islam’s mother Shabnam Sultana was present there.

In the press conference, Shabnam Sultana said, ‘Sarah was truly a heavenly child. Wherever he went, he used to charm everyone. She said, “Mother, you can give me everything for research.” Sarah wanted her brain to be researched.

In the press conference, BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed said, at the age of 10 months, Sara was diagnosed with incurable tuberous sclerosis. He was fighting this disease for 19 years. Recently he underwent brain surgery in a private hospital. He was admitted to ICU of BSMMU on January 13.

Doctors declared Sarah’s ‘brain death’ at six o’clock on Wednesday evening. The surgery started around 10:30 pm. Doctors first removed his two kidneys and two corneas.

A kidney is transplanted into a kidney patient at BSMMU. The other kidney is taken from BSMMU to the Kidney Foundation and transplanted into a woman’s body there. In addition, Sarah’s two corneas were implanted in both eyes today. One underwent surgery at BSMMU, the other at Eye Hospital.

Kidney transplants from close relatives have been carried out in the country for a long time. But not always the kidney of a close relative is available. For several years, experts have been talking about transplanting a person’s kidney with no hope of life. There are rules and laws about these things. It was claimed in the press conference that BSMMU and Kidney Foundation authorities have transplanted Sarah Islam’s kidney and cornea.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor said before finishing the speech at the press conference. Sharfuddin Ahmed said, “The name of the first organ donor Sarah Islam will be written in golden letters in the medical field. Awareness will be created among people through his sacrifice. Many people will get a new life.
