A tropical storm named Nicholas is currently pummeling Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain. The storm’s heavy rainfall has led to flooding in many areas, which has resulted in the evacuation of hundreds of homes. With more than four inches of rain already reported, Nicholas may cause severe flooding across much of southern Texas and Louisiana by this weekend.
In addition to violence from storms, residents should also take precautions against stray gunfire that may occur during the holiday weekend. According to a recent study by the CDC, for example, an estimated 30% of firearm-related injuries are unintentional and related to celebratory gunfire. Bystanders may think they’re celebrating with a fellow shooter when in reality they’re putting themselves and others at risk.
