The tree born from the blood of the dragon!

Trees also have life – Scientist Jagdish Chandra Bose has proved this long ago. There are many surprising facts about trees. Now let’s know about a tree which, when cut, ‘blood’ comes out.

A wonder of nature, this tree grows in small numbers along the coast of Yemen and the Arabian Sea. When this umbrella-shaped tree is cut, a sticky substance like blood comes out. That is why it is known as ‘Dragon Blood Tree’ to the locals.

There are many stories behind the strange names. It is said that this tree is born from the blood of a dragon, hence its name ‘Dragon Blood Tree’. And the red substance that comes out when the tree is cut is the dragon’s blood. However, scientists have proved through various experiments that it is actually tree resin.

The ‘Dragon Blood Tree’ grows to about 18 meters (60 feet) tall and 6 meters (20 feet) wide. No season rings are formed in this tree. The age of a tree is determined by the number of trunks. It can live up to 650 years. The plant flowers only once a year.

Surprisingly, this tree has many properties. Many people use the gum of this plant in various herbal treatments. This glue was also used in violin varnishing.

This rare tree grows mostly in Sukatra Deeppunj. For this reason, in 2008, UNESCO declared this region as a ‘World Heritage Site’. The ‘Dragon Blood Tree’ is on the verge of extinction due to climate change.
