A shooting in a Texas high school left four people injured and the 18-year-old suspected shooter on the run. The shooting was reported at 8:06am when shots were fired from inside Santa Fe High School, located about 30 miles southeast of Houston, reports CNN. Authorities believe the gunman acted alone and is still at large.
Two teachers and two students were injured. The student victims have been transported to a local hospital, according to the medical director of the University of Texas Medical Branch Trauma Center in Santa Fe. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner announced in a press conference that school police officer John Barnes, 49 was the first law enforcement agent to encounter the shooter. He went into action, said Turner. I hear reports he got shot in the elbow. He has been taken by helicopter to UTMB Hospital in Galveston after being taken to the hospital in Santa Fe.
Hospitals reported that they are treating at least three people with gunshot wounds. Authorities received reports of shots fired at around 7:45am, but noted the actual shooting may have happened about an hour earlier.
Law enforcement officials said the shooter used a shotgun and .38 revolver that were legally owned by his father, who was also at Santa Fe High school and questioned.
Pagourtzis made journal entry last night to say he wanted to kill people and commit suicide at the end. Officials believe Pagourtzis acted alone, but still searching for a motive.
Witnesses reported Pagourtzis was in black trench coat and wore a ‘Born to Kill’ shirt. He had a short shotgun, what looked like a 38 revolver in his waistband and multiple rounds of ammunition, reported CNN affiliate KTRK .
The son of one of the school’s teachers said he thought his mother was dying, after hearing shots fired in the art complex. Pagourtzis had no problem with school shooting, said sophomore Zach Lawford.
I did not think this would happen. He seemed like a nice kid. I don’t get it. We all played video games together, reported KTRK .
This is the 22nd school shooting in 2018. The country has experienced one school shooting every 60 hours thus far in 2018, according to Every Town Research.
Pagourtzis is being held without bail at the Galveston County jail, charged with capital murder of multiple persons and aggravated assault against public servant. He also admitted to committing the shooting, said authorities.
