Giants Lose Two Key Players Against Dallas

The New York Giants lost two key players against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night. Quarterback Daniel Jones went down in the second quarter with a knee injury, and running back Saquon Barkley was taken off the field on a stretcher after he sustained what looked like to be a head/neck injury.

At the time of his injury, Barkley was leading the NFL in all-purpose yards with 1,933 and had scored 15 touchdowns. Since entering the league in 2018, no player has more total scrimmage yards than Barkley (5,439) and he’s one of only three players to record at least 2,000 scrimmage yards in each of the last two seasons, joining Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Barkley is a first-round pick of the Giants in the 2018 NFL Draft from Penn State University, but was not selected to participate in this year’s Pro Bowl due to an injury.

In Jones’ absence Sunday night, veteran Eli Manning stepped in the game and completed 14 passes for 148 yards, including a touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton.

After the Giants’ 20-13 loss, ESPN’s Dianna Russini tweeted that she was told by several people “the belief is that Eli Manning will be back under center next week.” It has not been confirmed by Giants’ officials, but it’s a possibility that Eli Manning could start next week when the Dallas Cowboys will visit MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. “The Daily News” reported that it depends on how Daniel Jones recovers from his injury and whether or not he has any complications between now and next Sunday.

There was no update on either Barkley or Jones after the game. Barkley remained on the ground for several minutes before being taken to a hospital in an ambulance with his head immobilized by a brace. A few hours after the game, Barkley tweeted that he was feeling better and thanked fans for their support.

Jones remained on the sideline, where he put ice on his left knee, which he sprained during a sack by Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence late in the second quarter. Jones was helped off the field and never returned to the game after his injury.

As of early Monday morning, there are no new details on either Barkley or Jones’ injuries. However, Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur said that he did not think that either player would miss the rest of the season.

I don’t think it would be accurate to say that, Shurmur said during his postgame press conference, when asked if either Barkley or Jones were likely done for the season.

They’re probably both day-to-day and we’ll see how they progress. We will always err on the side of caution with all our players. I don’t have anything further other than that.

It was the Giants’ fifth consecutive loss, dropping their record to 1-7 on the season. The Cowboys moved to 6-4 with the win.

On Monday morning, Shurmur spoke with WFAN Radio in New York City and said that Barkley woke up feeling fine. With regard to Jones, Shurmur said that he didn’t have an update on his status.

I haven’t even had a chance to see him, Shurmur said of Jones. He came off the field and we were dealing with Saquon and things like that, so I just told our medical staff to take care of him and that we’d update you as soon as we knew something.

I will say this: I always do my job, for sure. But Eli is a competitor, I think he’s still our QB, and if his number’s called again, he’ll be ready to go.
