FBI Faces Questions On Intimidating Parents

Sen. Lee is no stranger to controversy, and he is not afraid to ask tough questions of those in power. His latest inquiry was directed at Attorney General Garland during a hearing on Capitol Hill this week. Do you believe the FBI should be intimidating parents? Sen. Lee asked, referencing an article published by The Guardian last year that revealed how the agency had threatened undocumented migrant families with deportation if they did not cooperate with investigations into their relatives suspected of terrorism or crime.

Senator, I don’t believe in this country parents are being intimidated by the FBI. That is not something that happens, Sen. Garland responded confidently. The FBI does not use coercion or intimidation to force people into talking about their relatives in that way. As he spoke, Sen. Lee shook his head in disbelief. Well, I read the article, and it sounds like parents were threatened with being sent to jail or prison if they did not help investigators. How is that not coercion? Sen. Lee countered.

Senator Lee has been a leader in Congress on civil liberties issues since his election in 2011, and this exchanges is just the latest example. An outspoken critic of the PATRIOT Act, Sen. Lee has been an invaluable ally to the Restore The Fourth movement, often speaking on our behalf during Congressional hearings and lending his support in other ways. Senator Lee is not afraid to ask tough questions or challenge authority, said Tiffiniy Cheng, co-founder of Restore The Fourth. His willingness to stand up for what is right and force accountability from those in power is inspiring, and we welcome his support as we continue advocating for the restoration of our constitutional rights.

The Stop Watching Us coalition released a video today featuring prominent voices including Sen. Lee, Glenn Greenwald , Rep. Justin Amash and more to drive home the message that we must take back our Fourth Amendment rights from an out of control National Security Agency that is spying on its own citizens without due process or accountability.

In response to Sen. Lee’s question, Sen. Garland agreed that the FBI should not coerce testimony from parents, but he refused to answer whether or not they had done so in this particular case. The article discusses how mothers who were forced to leave their children behind when they came to the US as unaccompanied minors were coerced into cooperating with investigations by threat of being sent to prison themselves.

Sen. Lee went on to speak about the big picture, saying that “those who would spy on all of us and violate our civil liberties” are those same people who would imprison these mothers against their will simply for not wanting to cooperate.
