New Zealand whitewashed hosts Ireland in the three-match ODI series but lost two matches. Despite having a strong chance of winning the ODI series,
losing Ireland could not fight in the first T20I. Glen Phillips’ impeccable batting and Lockie Ferguson’s bowling led the Kiwis to advance in the three-match series.
New Zealand lost the toss and batted first to pile up a capital of 173 runs in the first of the three-match series in Belfast on Monday (July 18). Chasing the target, the hosts were bundled out for 142 runs. The visitors won by 31 runs.
Leg-spinner Dan Clever and spin all-rounder Michael Bracewell made their debuts for the Kiwis with the regulars rested. However, the visitors were in danger at the beginning when they came out to bat.
New Zealand lost three batsmen in the first five overs of the innings. Martin Guptill could not increase the innings despite starting well with the bat.
